Audiophiles are never satisfied with good enough sound quality. And I agree. This one is being updated continually!
By Cindy Davis

Most people in the A/V industry and audiophiles know McIntosh Labs for outstanding products. Did you know they developed an app for listening to music? Their AP1 offers iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch owners the ability to listen to and playback music from their digital mobile device within the classic McIntosh experience featuring the McIntosh Labs signature blue meters.

This collection of apps from McIntosh, McDSP, Aphex and others deliver a myriad of benefits such as unique 32/64-bit rendering, surround sound DSP, real-time multi-band spectrum analyzers, real-time RMS bar, master and preamp digital volume adjustments and a lot more.

One thing audiophiles have in common is they like to tweak. These apps deliver quality and lots of control.

I am sure there are more audiophile-grade apps out there. Please drop me a line and let me know what you use.

No surprise! I have gotten a lot of emails about this one. Each week I am collecting more audiophile-grade apps from our readers and will post updates in the following week’s Appy Friday email newsletter. Please send me your favorite to be included — and tell us why.

Check out the most recent app entries from Bongiovi DPS, by Bongiovi Acoustics, LouderLogic by McDSP and Audio Xciter from Aphex.

I love these apps. I just can't use them because I use a windows phone. I want to encourage more AV app makers to write WP7 and WP8 versions of these apps. Thx!!!

This is absolute, total BS. It takes more than digital rendering of "blue meters" to make a real McIntosh. And there is absolutely no way to achieve true high quality audio from MP3s. Not possible. The person who did the original work which was later butchered by Fraunhofer Labs has explained to me in detail how they totally bollixed it. Not to mention the fact that anyone with a pair of functioning ears can easily hear the difference. (HINT: If you can't your ears are not attuned to listening to quality sound.)

I'd second AVL Ray's statement. With HTML 5 and other cross-platform frameworks there's no real reason to lock an app to one specific device or platform. I still prefer Blackberry for many reasons and want to see these apps universally available - not behind proprietary walled gardens.
